The Ruby-throated hummingbirds leave TN by the beginning of October. Last week there was a flurry of activity around the flowers & feeders as they prepare for their journey south. I still have at least two. Today was a gorgeous fall day and we worked outside all day. I kept my camera handy as they enjoyed the saliva.

Great photos Gail. The hummers are an interesting bird to capture in a picture.

Lovely shots Gail especially that first one. It looks as though those hummingbirds know exactly whose garden to visit to get enough food before their journey south.

Thanks Jerry, Eileen and Sjoerd. They are facinating to watch.
Sjoerd, the red variety is 'Lady in Red', fun name. It is an annual that self seeds so I never have to plant it, just weed it out. The coral one is Coral Nymph sage, they also love it.

gfreiherr yes those are some super shots of hummers. Last night on PBS they had a special about hummers. It was really interesting. Our hummers left Wis. a week or more ago. Wonder if some of those Ruby throated are some of the hummers that were here at my feeders this summer.

I love the pictures. We had a few hummers this year, but it has been so wet in the East I haven't been able to see quite as many as in past summers. Thanks for posting the name of the coral salvia. The same plant came up unexpectedly in my garden this year after being planted a few years ago. I didn't remember the name. I've been really pleased with this "volunteer." I'm planning to save seeds and plant even more this Spring.

I absolutely love your hummingbird pictures but don't put your feeders away too early. I am in Wisconsin and I had a hummingbird visit my cigar plant twice this morning when I was looking out. We have ruby throated hummingbirds too. It turned out beautiful today but cold nights are coming with lows in the 30's...hopefully he is well on his way towards the warmer weather.
I am trying out a new camera and not getting it to do things I want it to do...a Rebel T3...this one might go back to QVC ...

Thanks Sherry, I just made some more nectar today. I have two regulars that are still using my feeder. The usually leave the lst week of October. Good luck with the camera.

Stunning pictures Gail,
the first is my number one,i think its the bird against the red,..but the second is brilliant,.. that bird seems in among the plants,..but all three well captured you will miss those little creatures.
