Four years ago I purchased a small yellow mum for my $2.00 yard sale car. The end of October I planted it into the ground. In the spring it started growing. By July I could tell I was going to have two colors of flowers on the one plant. While much of the US was having a drought this year, we were getting to much rain. I pinch back the stems on my mums the end of June so they don't get leggy. This year I took 8 of the stems and dipped them into rootone and planted them next to "mama". Six of them rooted. Two of the six were bronze. This year my car is overloaded with "wine". Don (donm)
What a great idea. I never thought of doing that with Mums but I do save as many clippings as I can from from the gardens. I put them in the greenhouse as I fail to water sometimes where it waters automatically regularly for me. Barb in Pa.
What a cute planter your car is. The Mum was a good choice. I only have one Mum and it's trying to bloom now. I may try to get some starts from it.
just exactly how do you find seeds from the mum plant? I never see seeds in the garden centers for them and I can't seem to ID the seeds from the flower heads.
All the mums that you will find are plants. They are patented from all the producers. there are no seeds available for these plants (that I have ever seen available). When I worked in the greenhouse I rooted thousands upon thousands of these cuttings. My back ached from being bent over the prop beds for the day or few days depending on how many were needed for the crop. We never had a seed in the greenhouse for them.
