Jerry, you might create a rice learning experience if you 'google up' the town of Crowley, LA;...
Rice seed is available from several seed companies who specialize in heritage/heirloom and/or open-polinated seed.. There are varieties that do not require standing water as a growing medium..
Yes, Barb, the USA produces enough rice that some is exported, produced mostly in the Mississippi delta region..
Just a FYI note from Hank....

Where I live it used to be nothing but rice (and soybean) paddys. Now, if you go east towards Beaumont, you'll find a couple of paddys still in operation.
Every young man's rite of passage was to work at the rice dryer. What a dusty job that was!

Oh that makes sense. The rice lady I talked to said all her rice has gone through the dryer. That must kill the viability with the heat.
They don't want to share any unhulled rice with us. I think they think we will compete with them and put them out of business.

From the sound of it rice production in the Northeast will be very low. I wonder if you can call putting rice through a dryer riceicide ? The hunt for a few viable seeds may be more of a challenge than growing rice.

I haven't looked but rice seed seems like the kind of thing seedman.com would have. I look now.
Edited to add.... I don't see it, sorry.

Texmati long grain medium brown rice is grown in south Texas around Alvin, Texas.
We have started eating it instead of other brands...not just because it is a Texas product but because it is really good.
