My folks grew dahlias, Big tall flowers. They always had to stake them. They grew about 5-7 feet. They would plant them in the spring and dig them up in the fall. They had sandy soil so the plants drained well. Not too much fertilizer, acid soil, store them away in the fall between layers of newspapers and peat moss. About all I remember.

I can successfully keep Dahlias clumps over. You have to let them cure in the fall. Last fall I let mine lay around where it was too hot & they started to shrivel,(not good). So I put them in a bag with a wad of damp newspaper.Well,I forgot them again & they got mold on them.
So I took them out & dusted with cinnamon. This took care of the mold & I put them in a cardboard box & they are fine(just checked)It is very cool where I store things. Also I used to have trouble with a wet basement but we had it waterproofed & all my cannas & dahlias & elephant ears look good.
