We picked up 12 bales of straw today to use in our garden for $2 a bale! The gentlemen that helped load us asked if we were going to use them for planting tomatoes. We had never heard of that. I just searched and found this article in Mother Earth news. We may have to try it!

Thanks Okie... that was great reading... very informative. I have one square bale of straw leftover from last year just sitting there. Hmmmm....

This subject has come up a couple of times in the long past, once in 2006 and again in 2008....but apparently no one has actually grown anything using them since there has been no updates to these posts. Sad

When you do start planting in them, please post photos of the beginning process, growing season progress and crop harvesting.

Don't throw stones at me, but TO ME it just sounds silly the whole idea Smile
A lot of hay needed, a lot of preparations and for what? A couple of tomato plants???
I'd like to know a technique to keep tomatoes planted in the garden healthy in a drought-y summer !!!
