A few years back, I transplanted some tickseed sunflowers from the wild to my garden. They bloomed and went to seed, and I now have them growing everywhere. The problem is that each year, less and less of the plants bear flowers with petals. Now they just look like weeds with burrs where there should be flowers. These plants grow and reseed vigorously, but without petals. Can anyone explain this phenomenon?

I found this website that tells you all about tickseed sunflowers Young1 BUT it doesn't say anything about no petals forming. Sad

http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/wetland/plants/ts_sunflower.htm

I wonder if it's actually some night insect that's munching the petals - maybe earwigs? Sorry I can't be more helpful to you but I'd like toWELCOME you to our forums. I hope you'll stay with us and join in the fun here. Very Happy

No, it is definitely not a pest. The flowers are clearly forming without petals.

Hi again.

I found this website about plants with no petals but I don't know if it actually answers your question for you.
