Some info on Medinilla magnifica This tropical plant, native from Africa across southern Asia to the Pacific islands requires the humidity found in the steamy tropics. The flowers of this plant give it the common name of the rose grape as flower stalks grow from the tips of the branches. Re-potting every 2-3 years will allow the plant to grow or to control it's size keep it in the same pot and top dress it every year by removing the top 2-3 inches of soil and replacing it with new soil. It likes a summer temperature about 70°F and a winter temperature of the low 60's. In the winter reduce the water but do not allow the soil to dry out. It is still important to maintain the humidity so place it on a dish of moist pebbles and mist regularly. While it is taking it's winter nap, do not fertilize. From spring to fall fertilize with a half strength 10-20-10 fertilizer every 2 weeks. Pink flowers appear at the ends of pink bracts to accent the up to foot long dark green leaves. Hi Greenthunb, thought that you might want to see mine, it stays green all year and enjoys our warm temperatures, there is also a peach coloured one on the market here now...pity I dont have room. Some people grow them in baskets because the flowers get heavy and flow down beautifully.The miniature one is a great basket specimen. Mine is the regular size one and as you can see the plant and leaves are quite large...they are beautiful though, very lush.Will grow up to 5-6ft. Jerry you are so right it is a beautiful plant.
