Mystery weed with short appressed hairs & thick purple s

Below are some pictures of my mystery weed. It's just about a foot tall now with alternate serrated leaves, no petiole, thick fleshy stem which is purple at the base, thick roots possibly rhizomatous, short appressed hairs on the stem & both sides of leaf. No milky sap when I tear off a leaf. No particular smell. I live in zone 6a. No bloom yet unfortunately; I'm going to try to keep it alive til then unless it gets too big. . . Any ideas out there?

It has been identified as American burnweed, Erechtites hieraciifolia. Mystery solved!
