My son in Virginia sent this photo of a neighbors flowers near Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. I thought it was a "sweet pea" but wasn't sure! is this a sweet pea? ( photo / image / picture from loretta426's Garden ) sorry, couldn't turn it! ( photo / image / picture from loretta426's Garden )
That's a Lablab purpureus (Hyacinth Bean) very easy to grow. The flowers will fade and fall to be replaced with dark purple seed pods. The seeds are black with a white strip.
They are in the same Family-Fabaceae but the Lathyrus odoratus (Sweet Pea) is the Lathyrus Genus and the Lablab purpureus (Hyacinth Bean) is the Lablab Genus
They are one of my favorite plants now. I think I'll always have some growing... and I've got a few other people hooked on them (thanks to Toni!)
