Two possibilities that can be ruled out are Catalpa which produces white flowers and Paulownia tomentosa (Empress Tree) which produces white-purple flowers.

In what area of the country is the plant? Has it ever produced a fruit? How long has it been growing and does it die back to the ground in winter or just lose it's leaves?
