What is the tallest hosta I could plant? Looking on line it appears 36 inches is the tallest. Since I am so infatuated with these beauties I have decided to pull up an ugly old rose and replace it with a hosta! It is the perfect shady spot in our yard :p It will grow right under my living room window, beside the front porch railing. I'm just not sure 36 inches is tall enough :-? Does anyone know the names of the tall guys or know if 36 inches is just a guesstimate from the growers?

Netty has one in her garden and I think Droopy does too. Supposed to be about 5 feet tall and wide at maturity

Yikes! I have more hostas than I can handle and need to split them but none are that big! I do have a huge blue elephant ear one... about 3 feet.

There are several very big hostas. One of the Empress Wu's parents is rather huge too. My friend has some meter-tall, blue ones, but they're so boring...

Here are a few picts of my big hostas, they are in a very neglected back corner, difficult to get to but not forgotten. I am slowly moving them out to other areas of the yard. The turn a green blue in drier times but we've had so much rain and heat, they think they took steroids and are growing!

This is one off by the woods:

here is a single off alone ( photo / image / picture from CrisGzr's Garden )
This shows the side of a clump, it is open because I removed one large plant last year, to the left is a plant about about 3-4 feet wide:

I can't find my ruler or yardstick, which means they are together, I grabbed my tape measure, so little accuracy. This is the solitary single plant:

    about 12 inches long ( photo / image / picture from CrisGzr's Garden )

I think I will move that large clump next spring and put in a Native 3 Sisters Garden. It gets okay sun here and it will be easier to fence it off from the deer.

I can take no credit, they were here before us. And it's pretty impossible to kill hosta around here... I've found them everywhere! I cut back a few bushes, raked out the pile of leaves underneath and uncovered hosta! Each year I find a new variety. This year I found one with a pale green border on each leaf! and Rich found a hoard of ones with white borders.

I am so glad I recently read that it is better to split them in the spring when they are shoots! That makes sense! I was damaging them trying to get into this mess with these big floppy elephant ears hiding wolf spiders.... shudder...

not if you saw one of the wolf spiders living under the leaves!

They seem to really like hosta and occasionally my house but now I have Quinn, my pup in shining armor to stomp them!
