Looks like webshots is "changing"... yea right.
They are closing webshots, which is free, so they can open a new one which is not-so-free.
    SAD, SAD, SAD!

So if you have ALL your pictures on webshots and you don't feel like making your small contribution to the new site, well, better hurry and save your picture on your computer.

But I WONDER... which site for photo hosting will last longer as a FREE service???

I have been on webshots for quite a few years, been their no 1 fan... and NOW THIS!

I have been using Photobucket for ages now, and it is still free. I think that Shutterfly may still be free as well. I believe that there are several more too.

I always hate it when a free service changes to a paid one.

That's a pity Cal. From reading their page here http://smile.webshots.com/landing it seems you can transfer your photos to their new Smile account but after December 1 they will not be viewable by anyone but you.
I'm glad I added our own photo upload feature here (basic as it is) to prevent against exactly this.

calinromania, Thank you for making me aware of this.

Thank you Frank, I went to the link you posted.

I have been paying Webshots every year for what, I don't know. I never use it anymore and I noticed the free accounts had almost as much storage as I was paying for ten years. At the beginning I had more ability to move and rearrange my albums, right on my computer, than the free members. In the end everyone could do the same thing right on line.

I am going to download all my pictures and cancel my membership. 30 dollars is 30 dollars. I have pictures up there of my daughter that I don't have anywhere else. It would be terrible if I lost them.

    Again thanks, Barb in Pa.

Thanks for the info. I haven't put any photos on webshots in years.
Thanks for that link Frank, I needed to find out how to get my photos from there to here. Pretty sure I have them on my computer but it would take a while to search since I have loads of files of photos. I am having them gather my photos and send them to me.

Edited to add....I got the link from them for downloading my photos...but it was a dead link!!! Randy dug into the source code, found what he was looking for and finally got the blasted thing open. Now I have my photos where I want them.

Thank you Frank. I just called and let her know. She will have to use the net in town next week. She says she does have originals on her computer, so at least she won't loose her work.

I've never used Webshots as I've always stuck with Photobucker. I hope everyone can save their photographs. At least there should be time before the 1st of December dawns and they start to charge.

I feel really out of it. We just keep our photos on our computers.

Cayuga... I'm with you. My photos are saved to my computer... and alot of times to my computer at my office too. I use Shutterfly when I want prints made... or to share photos with my sister. Other than that... they are right here.
Which reminds me...it's time for me to back up my photos to CDs again.

Well yes, most of the pics I uploaded are still on my computer (I HOPE).
But it's the idea of losing someone that's part of my life now.
Sending a link, uploading a thumbnail to a forum, and so on...makes it easy than always asking for a email address, finding the picture on my computer, attaching it to the email, and waiting for the reply and so on.

Oh well, will choose another one and hope it stays free for a while.

Webshots was really cool (for me).

I only use Flikr. If I use their free service then I can keep all my pictures there but I can only use the last 200 and no bigger than 1024 x 768. The other pictures are still there and I can use those too when I upgrade my account to Flikr Pro next month. Then I can use all my pictures I put there and I can display them in 4000 x 3000.

Webshots didn't close.. I had paid for it for years. They now are webshots smiles or something like that. Now everyone has to pay......I will delete and transfer all my pics before my renew time. They most many of my daughters photos on the big transfer. I had communicated with them allot and they can't recover them. That is a big loss and yes, I should have had them somewhere else but just didn't.....I have thousands of them so they fell through the cracks. My loss on the photos and the child......
