This is a rock drilled out for maples. Eventually, the roots will crush the rock and the whole display will be planted into a pot.

This is where the collection is kept. We were lucky in that this structure was already attatched to the garage with a gorgeous wisteria growing on it.

This is the side view. He planted winter blooming jasmine behind the bench.

We have some great gardening talent on this forum. The bonsai are so beautiful. I really want to learn to do that. What is the principal behind planting them in a rock? We have a lot of silver leaf maples come up wild around here, could I use one of those.

Imitating nature is desirable. The overall effect ought to be of trees with roots growing over rocks. This one is in the early stages, obviously. I wish I had a photo of a similar tree in nature.

Gosh your bonsai put mine to shame as I only have two pots. One is a small copse of 4 rubber trees but they're only a few years old and the other is a white elm. If I run into difficulties I now know who I can ask to help me out!!! Very Happy
