Woooohoooo, the wall of shutters is almost finished.

Early last year I responded to an offer on the rEcycle list I co-own. The member had two sets of approximately 6 feet tall shutters that he had removed from his livingroom windows. I was lucky enough to receive them from him and thankfully before we could get them installed last summer the kid across the street crashed into our front wall. Since the room was rebuilt last year, the shutters have been waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting to reach the top of the "to do" list I had for Randy.

This is the before. Behind our futon is the back of the upright piano, my computer desk is across the room and to the right.

Then the almost complete after shot. We still have to paint, or that is I have to paint. The shutters didn't fill up the entire space so on the left is a small bookcase that will soon have shelves to hold doo-dads and across the top of the shutters is a long shelf for more doo-dads....and believe me we have enough doo-dads to fill that space and more. The futon will be infront of the lower part of the case but the shelves will be there in case I ever rearrange furniture. The shutter section that has a gap at the top between it and that long shelf will be hinged to the shutters on the right to make a doorway for me.

Ever since I was a young girl I have had dreams of a room behind a secret doorway and now I will have one.

When I finish painting and everything is really finished I will post another picture. I am also going to make a plaque to hang above the door way that says "SUKHAVATI - Place of Bliss" and when I do not want to be disturbed I will have a sign that says "Nobody gets to see the Wizard! Not nobody, not no how"

Wow, how nice. I love the name. My dream is to have my own shed, barn shaped, no cats, no dogs, no kids, maybe Richard once in a while, just me, myself and I. Lucky you.

So now you are like the Wizard of Oz behind the curtains? You need to install a loudspeaker so you can shout out things from behind there in a menacing tone Mr. Green

So did you get the shutters for free Toni or was it a trade? In any case you did a great job installing them even if they were not 100% suited to the location size-wise. They look totally natural there now, if you had switched the before and after pics I would have thought someone drove through another wall Wink.

And also interestingly we got to see the Toni desk. Is that Stew I see flittering on the screen? Wink

Good job Toni!

I can now picture you Toni sitting at your computer desk behind those great shutters. Of course you're logged in to GardenStew and enjoying the peace and quiet. Mr. Green What a wonderful idea those shutters are - much better than curtains which most people have. Really looking forward to a photograph of the completed project. Very Happy

This is exactly what the doctor ordered. Sometimes hubby's don't realize that we are anxiously waiting for the "honey do" list to move forward. Cool

We have a doorway like this too - I put a curtain rod across the top and we have a lightweight curtain (actually a converted king-size sheet) that can be pulled across it when someone needs a little privacy. When it isn't closed, it's pulled to the side by a twining of fake wired ivy.

The shutters look great - I especially like your creativity in dealing with the gaps that were left. What color are they going to be painted?

The now plain wood parts will be painted to match the walls. That will be pretty close to the shutter color, with the glare it doesn't look like it.....the wall paint is a matte and the shutters are a high gloss, but it should look okay. Especially since not only do I avoid the sun like the plague, I also avoid turning on lights as much as possible.

I love your private space! I have a curtain I pull across when the weather turns cold, so the heat stays in the rooms where the people are and doesn't all go to the ceiling of the stairwell!

Dooley, yes I made the quilted wall hangings. The Star one on the far wall was one that received an Honorable Mention in the competition sponsored by the P&B Textile Company and spent a year traveling to quilt shows around the country with the other winners.

I am hoping to get some pictures of that side room taken and posted soon. There are four of my quilts hanging around back here. And one hanging over the old stove in the livingroom.
