strange green plant with burr like center stem

    Any ideas on this one? I planted rutgers tomato seeds last summer and ended up with a massive 4 foot tall bush and no tomatoes. A gardening expert insisted it wasn't rutgers at all. The burr like top grows and the stem ends up with small burrs on it. I finally cut it down last year only to find it growing again this year but down in the grass directly below whete it was last year.

    Some kind of weedy Amaranth I'd say.

    Try Acalypha hispida Alba, you should be in the ballpark. The 'tail,' usually red is whitish to pink in this cultivar. Four feet sounds about right.

    yes... pigweed... i think this is the only plant (well, weed) I know the common not the botanical name :)

    The botanical name is Amaranthus.
