This morning at 7:30am the truck with 8 yards of garden soil arrived. By 9:30, it was wheelbarrowed into place, raked into appropriate shapes and the truck was gone. Donna and I bought some plants yesterday, so I got those spotted. Her youngest son was here to work, so I put him to it. He and I went out to a favorite nursery and loaded up my van with more plants and mulch and back we came. Here's what's in the ground so far: 8 flats of petunias and snaps, 1 flat of zinnias, 3 dwarf ginger, 3 Louisiana Irises, gamecock, 1 walking iris, 1 weeping bottle brush tree, one duranta, one cassia, 1 giant bird of paradise, 6 mums, 3 swiss chard, 3 radicans, 18 ornamental cabbages and more I have forgotten. Mulch is on site, but not down. PIcs when we can lift the camera and move our legs again. Jeff, the grunt worker is fine. I am dragging. Could it be the difference in age? He is 28.

It sounds like you did way too much for one day. Can't wait to see the photos. As you know here in Michigan there is no such thing as a fall garden.

I know, no fall garden in Michigan. Gotta find the snow shovels and get them at the ready, put a 100 lb bag of sand in the trunk of the car, put a huge bag of salt in the garage for use on the steps. Can you tell I lived there and then Chicago until I was 28? Then I vowed I would never shovel snow again, came to New Orleans and have not been able to earn enough money to leave after all these years.

I hope you took a long, hot soak in the tub after all that effort Jan. I envy you all those plants how I wish I could grow some of the more exotic ones here!! You MUST definately take piccies for us. Erm by the way what the heck is a walking iris??
Oh to be 28 again and be able to do all the jobs in the garden I once did.

I enjoyed a jacuzzi tub. Love it. Even as much as I love it, it was hard to get my aching body out. Aspirin tonight. Mulch is down, garden is watered in. Pics tomorrow. Oh and I forgot taro....3 of them as well.

Yes,please tell us what a walking Iris is .You must not have found a house as you wouldn't be planting so much now.I can't wait to see pictures of all you planted.

We did not find a house, you are right. And now we have decided that we are just not physically nor psychologically ready to make yet another major life change. So we are going to try to stay put for 2 more years.
A walking iris is one that sends out a shoot that flops over and starts another iris about 6" away. After a few years the Iris has walked all over your garden. It's also called the apostle plant. Mine has not yet started walking, so it will look like just any old iris. Pics tomorrow, assuming I can move in the morning.

Lol.I do hope you didn't do to much .I will have a load of compost delivered soon .I want to get my fall garden started really soon.It rained all day today and suppose to do the same tomorrow .I have to go back to work Thursday .Nothing got done on my days off except in my house .I was happy for the rain.I have to have some of the walking irises.I hope I can find them.

A walking iris can also be put in a hanging basket, where it will resemble an airplane plant, but will have little iris plants hanging down. The shoots first make a pretty little orchid looking flower that only lasts for a few hours, then shrivels up.
Jan, it sounds as if you did overdo it today. I'll bet your new flower bed will be well worth all the pain and suffering once it is filled out and in full bloom. Can't wait for pics.

I bet the bed looks great Jan and photos will most definitely be in order. Can you attach some fake legs to the Walking Iris just to appease my mental image? (great minds Eileen eh)

Photos as soon as it gets light and my legs work again....in an hour or so, I expect.
28? hmmmmm, I'm not sure I remember all that well. Oh yes, I was just out of school, waiting for the world to faint at my feet and wondering why it didn't. And I was NOT a gardener at all. That came about 10 years later.
