They both start to rot from touching each other. So to keep them from touching, take cheap nylon stockings or panty hose and drop one in and tie a knot. Then keep doing that until you have all the onions or potato's stored. Then hang the stockings from the floor joists in your basement or storage area. I have a friend in Georgia that buys Vidalia onions by the 50 lb bag and he rarely looses an onion to rot!

To use one or more, simply snip the hose off just below the knot and there you have a perfect onion or potato!

Excellent idea Captain - So thanks for sharing! But I'm a guy... So wouldn't it look odd, if I ended up buying nylon stockings or panty hose??? I mean, you've been in the Navy too, so you know what I'm talking about!
    :frustrated:

Yes yes, the idea/concept is very good - But now please also suggest some method of how a guy can buy panty hose from the market (without becoming the butt of all jokes for at least a decade)... As blemishes like that, specially on one's reputation - Other people don't easily forget over here. :D :D :D

And no, asking a lady friend to do this favor for me will not work - As Pakistani women are known to gossip behind your back, (with no end in sight)... Therefore nobody will ever believe that all I wanted was to keep my onions and potatoes from rotting. :smt044

Sure, why not - And then the postman will start gossiping about me to the entire community... :smt044

Now if I was something like Corporal Max Klinger of M*A*S*H 4077th, who actually sought a section 8 discharge - Then everyone would understand. But reality is a bit different... :D

You are funny, S-H, looks like you have no way round but to buy fresh 'aloo' and 'pyaaj' from the market on a weekly basis after all :p

    Thanks for the tip, Capt!

Not exactly, as whenever I need any onion, potato, garlic, or ginger - I usually pull them out from the ground. But a better form of storage is essential too, firstly to store all your surplus, and secondly for the off season...

Still I got a better idea, one that will not ruin my social standing either - - Which is to wrap each onion and potato in medical gauze. This will be very cheap, and far longer lasting than any nylon stockings or panty hose (and very hyginic too).

In fact a very long tube can be easily stitched out of medical gauze - So all I'll have to do is drop in a onion or potato, then twist it around once and put a clothespin there. After which I put in another onion or potato - And keep repeating this until I run out of space!
