I have a couple pots simply full of EWO. I need to separate them but not sure when the best time to do it is. They are in full growth now and I plan on taking a bunch and pickling them and freezing some to eat. I do want to separate them but I want them to produce top sets this year as they are the mature ones.

Can I separate them and replant them and expect to get bulb sets this fall? Should I just wait until they produce sets and then separate them?

Also, does anyone have any experience with storing them long term? How should I do it to get the longest storage out of them?

Wish some of the very smart ones would have posted here.

In the meantime, I will. Walking onions are very hardy. You can just about throw them in a hole and full them in with dirt or spread them out nice like. I have moved them in Spring and Summer and they will catch up on the next cycle but i think most people move or transplant them in the Fall.

I have heard of people eating them before but never had any. Have you eaten them before. I have pickled regular pearl onions.

I have nibbled on the stalks and even bit into a bulblet from the top, once. I know if I do decide to eat them it won't take much to flavor a dish with them! Would make some really good deep fried onion poppers I think. Gonna have to grow a lot of them but I think a 3x3 boxed planter about 10 inches deep should give me more than I can need to make some really strong onion dishes.
