As you all know, I started a love affair with hostas a summer or two ago :-o I adore the minis but have decided I need a GIANT!~ I cleaned out the bed near my front door and would like a tall one, but not too wide. I don't want it to crowd out my turks cap lilies.
Any suggestions? I'd love fragrant flowers and colorful leaves......

So stratsmom, Is it a very very hot and heavy love affair? Are you sure this is not just a cheap fling and you are not really in LOVE??

Sorry, I was just having a little fun with your emotional desires.....

One of my favorite is 'Sum and Substance'. It doesn't have the largest leaves but they are good size. They will live in just about any conditions.

Emperess Wu is one with very large leaves. Not sure of the flower but these leaves are big.

    :p

Sum and Substance is nice, I also like Sagae. They are both quite large. My favorite Hosta is my Plantignea - not too large with a wonderfully scented white bloom.

My first suggestion was 'Sum and Substance' also, but I also like Hosta 'Krossa Regal'. There are so many choices :stew1:

Barb, this is a true love affair of the heart!!

When I first came up with this idea, "Empress Wu" was the first plant that popped into my head. However, after reading up on it I found that it might be just too big for this particular spot :-o (Aren't I hard to please?) I have a "Krossa Regal" in the back yard that is really struggling for some weird reason so that is why I turned to all of you :-D When I was out enjoying the sunshine today I stopped off at one of the supermarkets down the street, looking to see if they had some cute pansys. Low and behold, they had this display of hostas for $2.79!!! There were 3 different kinds and I chose 2 of the big variety. It is called "Elegans"

As you can see by the watering can for comparison these are good sized starts! The pots are an odd size I've never seen before, I think 5 inches tall and 4 inches wide or somewhere in that area. The roots are busting out of the bottom of the pot! The tag says 30-36inches. I was thinking of planting them in a whiskey barrel or something raised to add a new dimension to that boring old corner
    Wish me luck!
If I do stumble across "Sum & Substance" you can bet I'm going to check it out!

stratsmom, Now. That was one of the cheapest love affairs that I have ever heard of. :) I think $2.79 for such a large plant is really cheap.

I think I have Hosta 'Elegans' somewhere out there. I'll have to look today.

Your tastes seem to be along the same line of mine. I love the minis, of course, you know that, and I love the big, big, big ones. I also love the variegated and yellow to white ones.

They are definitely making ME drool Eileen! :D Although, is it just me or is Nature Hills a little expensive? I see they have a Hosta called "Captain Kirk" - I wonder if our Capt Kirk has one in his garden?

Netty your right they are expensive at Nature Hills. I put the link in for there though as they show the zones the plants prefer to be in. There are some real beauties in both places though aren't there? :-D

On the hosta subject, have any of you started them from seed?

I am a Hostaholic from way back... I can not stop planting them.
I love my Sagae, Sum and Substance, Krossa Regal, and Paul's Glory. Actually, I love em all big or small!
This makes me want to go (again) outside to check for pips!!!

I started a Hosta Ventricosa from seed about 10 years ago. It has done well and is more than ready to be split.
