This weed has taken over our whole front yard! We do the Scott's steps faithfully every year. I've done 6 Weed B Gon treatments and they're as alive as ever! Please help me identify and help me get rid of this weed! Thank u guys! What's this weed? ( photo / image / picture from Stephanielapierre's Garden )
We have it here in PA, too. I found this while doing a search. It is called purple or red deadnettle, Lamium purpureum.
Is the Scotts treatment you mention a pre-emergent? If it's like it's cousin Henbit then you need to use a pre-emergent in the Autumn. Deadnettles will grow all through the winter, bloom in Spring and usually die back when hot weather hits, at least the Henbit does. The entire plant is edible so if all else fails, eat it.
No, I don't think that's Lamium purpureum. I think it is Ground Ivy aka Creeping Charlie (Glechoma hederacea). It's usually green, but comes up with that reddish purple color in spring.
I took another picture This is a close up of one of the "flowers" ( photo / image / picture from Stephanielapierre's Garden )
Hello Steph...is it possible to get a well-lit close-up of the twig end where the redness and flowers are? If it is indeed Lamium purpureum, here are some options: http://purdueturftips.blogspot.nl/2013/ ... urple.html
If henbit, it's an annual, so mowing it often while flowering will prevent it from dropping another crop of seeds. Whether mowed or not, it will die after making flowers (or unsuccessfully attempting to.)
