Saturday evening, a hail storm sallied through our area. The hail stones were the size of green peas. Here are the results. Poor bedraggled hosta ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) Azalea trounced ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) Red twigged dogwood lost bunches of leaves ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) Oh dear. ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) Big leaved hostas were hit the worst ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) Ditto ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) My favorite Hosta (H. fortunei 'Aureomarginata') ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) They'll all recover, right?
Plants are tougher than we think. Even though it's heartbreaking to see, its still nature doing its thing. Who knows, maybe the hail got rid of some bugs hiding out?
That was some hail storm. Your hostas look like my dogs ran through them. new leaves will hopefully cover the tatters.
Oh Noooooooooo..... What a shame. Well, they will recover, but they are damaged for this year. Of course I can't see them in person, but they don't look so terribly bad from this end. I get the feeling that slug damage could be worse. Well meid--condolences for the damage, perhaps you can call your damnaged plants, "Doily-leafed Hosta"s, and charge a small entrance fee for visitors to view them. BTW--you have some nice hosta specimens there.
I thought the damage the rain did to my peonies was bad. Thank goodness our garden plants are so resilient and manage to survive damage like yours have sustained.
Thanks all. Our son graduates on June 6th & his party is the next day. I have been working hard to get the garden party-ready. I think I will take Sjoerd's advice & tell people the hostas are the Doily-leafed kind!
