Just wondering if it could be Fireblight? Or is that not an issue in your area?
I just recently saw another person have a similar issue and found that was the culprit.

I have no idea! but leaves did not turn brown as I would suspect in case of a fire blight they just yellowed an dropped.

Not fire blight, it does not affect stone fruit. Just wondering how much rain have you had recently? This sounds like what happens when the roots drown.

greenfinger, I personally would let the tree go till next spring and see if it recovers. For two years now we have had an opposite thing happen where all the leaves have turned brown after flowering, still producing lots of baby fruit, and then regrowing brand new bunches of leaves on the ends of the branches to finally make a full tree. It did this last year and is following suit this year. Not sure what it is, but the tree seems to go thru something in early spring and then repair itself and produce fruit.

Not fire blight,, fire blight does not affect stone fruit. Just those with seed ! And if it were,,the leaves would not drop. Just die and turn brown.

Thanks Clay_22. Bunkie, yes we will wait until next Spring and see if it recovers!
Mart, I meant we are suspecting the root drowning thing too.
