It started raining Tuesday at 10 PM. This morning my rain gauge showed six inches. I try a few new beans and peas each year. The following are a few photos of this years selections. 21 Peas. A crowder type. It's very vigorous. It has a beautiful flower that produces two pea pods. I can't wait to see if I can get any pods with 21 peas in them. Dixie Lima. Blue Coco. Kentucky Wonder Yellow Wax Pole.
Don, it's a jungle out there! Your garden certainly stood up to the rain, and seems to have benefitted from it, too. Lovely prolific greenery!
I got 8 pints of wax beans in the last 24 hours. I will blanch and freeze them. We will use them quickly. Otherwise I would have canned them if there were more and it was farther into the season. donm, things look good in your neck of the woods. we got rain but not nearly what you did.
Don, for that much rain your garden looks great. We got about 3" of it this past couple of days. And it is not very warm!
Great bean foto's. Man, I really love beans. I like beans so much that I even like seeing foto's of other folks' piccies of beans. hahaha. What am I like. That bean flower really IS lovely. Do you freeze-in beans for eating during the winter?
Donm your beans are beautiful. The 21 peas here is known as long beans we love eating them. This is what I have growing in my garden right now. ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) Because of the very infertile land they are a bit thin and short, I'm sure yours is going to be long fat and juicy. We Chinese especially the Cantonese always refer to long winded person as a long bean or the side effect of eating long beans is becoming long winded Oops!!! did I had one long bean too many?!?
Oh! Oh! I buy them when I go to Reading Terminal in Philadelphia. That's the only place I can find them. They don't even have them in the oriental grocery stores in NJ. When I go there I buy them, eat some and dry some to grow. They are good. I didn't know they were called 21 peas. They are a cow bean.
Barb--What is a cow bean??? Donm--Your beans look GREAT! I hope your 21 peas produce well for you. (When I 1st read your post, I of course thought your 21 peas were peas & was surprised you were growing peas now.) KK--Thanks for the photos of the long beans. I have never seen them. I have just planted some beans in deep pots about a month ago. They are up & looking healthy. I shall see if they have a chance to produce before the frost cuts them down.
Yes Mart, they are sometimes called Chinese long beans but more commonly "Yard Long Beans" and sometimes "Asparagus Beans". I did a quick check and Burpee have it. They call it Asparagus Yardlong beans. Good luck! :-D
I know those beans. We call them "Kousenbanden". There seem to be different types, but the ones that we know are the ones that are common in Indonesia and Suriname. The dutch word, kousenband means "garter" in english. I can't grow them here, but I sure can eat them! One can eat them in many restaurants here, although the Indonesian and Suriname restaurants and toko's are the best place to find them. Yummie!
When I grew the long beans, I started them in the greenhouse then put them outside. The first thought I had was that they may need a longer growing season.
