Hi bcchronic and welcome to the community :)

Now to your question but it's kind of hard to answer without a photo to work with. What colour are you hard wood floors? If you can get a photo posted we would be able to give our suggestions much easier. We could possibly guess blind by a photo would help a lot ;)

Hope you can get one posted.

Hi bcchronic, first of all welcome to the Stew from north Texas.

Almost everything goes with black whether it is furniture or clothes. You might want to start with deciding what feel you want the room to have. Comfy and calm, a place where you can sit quietly alone or visiting with friends.....or a more vibrant room where you feel energy when you enter it. I recently saw a bedroom that was mostly black and browns with dark gold and sage green accents, very calming and restful.
If you put black with primary colors, (red, blue, yellow) you could end up with a room that makes you feel more on edge than comfy.

Do you like the look of chrome and glass? Or wood? Or maybe wood with wrought iron?
I suggest you start roaming thru furniture stores of all kinds or go to the library and look thru design magazines or books and get an idea of what you really like.

Don't go with colors or styles that are this seasons must have designs, you may end up hating them next season when the fashion changes. Go with colors and styles you really like.

Hiya bcchronic, I'm looking forward to seeing your next post with the photo.

I expect that I approach decorating much the same way as Toni.
It seems to me that the next question is what sort of "style" appeals to you?
    Modern? Traditional? Minimal? Cozy? . . . ?
Color, and furniture style, will help you to establish a decor that reflects your taste.

I saw a room done in which furniture using black and chrome was used to go with the black suite, including chrome/silver frames around black and white images on the white walls. Looked fantastic.

hi thanks for the warm welcome. What i want to do with my living/ dining room is create a place that is warm and comfy but also shows some class. I am not into the sessional items, I much rather prefer furniture and art that is timeless. My biggest confusion comes to the coffee table and rug that woudl go underneath it. Since the floors are hardwood, would there be to much contrast to put a dark carpet down with a pine or beech colored coffee table? or would it be better to lay down a light colored rug with a dark cofeee table... or would that make the place feel dark and uninviting? I assume the emd table most likely would be the same color and styule as coffee table. I also have a wood lightly burgandy pianted dining table , but if that doesnt go with the look im going for I will use it for soemthing else. Heres a pic of my place living room on the groud oare 3 balck and white poster i was considering framing and hanging through out my place.... I also plan to paint a few peiace that i would like to hang and depending on they look I would consider takign the posters down.... Doi you guys think a orangy painting with the siloute in black of a beach would go well above the love seat? Anyways here is the pic of my place along with some links of furntitue i was considering getting for my place let me know what you think, any help is appreciated.

Btw, the end table in the pic is just temp.

I think the coffee table looks great Bcchronic but, sorry, I don't like the rug I'm afraid. :( I'd be tempted to go for something a bit brighter myself. Red, yellow or orange all look good with black and white but ultimately the choice of colour has to be to your taste not mine. :-D

I have a black couch, a black La-Z-Boy and a black Ottoman. I added playful throw pillows of mostly the primary colors. Furniture I have to go with it are a glass coffee table, an aged wicker storage and a red bar stools which matched one of my pillows. Just to give you an idea, not really telling you to do the same but just wanted to show you how having black couches can be the safest to accentuate. Good luck!

My mom definitely likes a classy look, and her furniture is black. She added end & coffee tables in a medium-color wood with simple lines, and there is a soft green rug, and a green window scarf, green in her paintings and green plants (real ones, not fake) Then she punched it all up with translucent red glass accents (candleholders, vases, and such) and put deep red pillows behind the green ones on her couch. The connecting dining room is mostly neutrals, but with a dramatic red curtain. Looks very nice & classy.
