She always puts together a big luxury food hamper for me for Chrimble - fancy oils and vinegars, herbs and spices, extracts and pastes.....but this year I received a HUGE bonus. She made me this quilt, by hand, all self taught! Mum is soooooooooooo clever - she can look at something and have an idea what to do, then get on with it! She did of course have a book to help, but for her first ever quilting attempt, I think this king size quilt is just AMAZING! I LOVE YOU MUM!

That quilt is SOOO gorgeous!!
I'd be in total awe even if you'd said that your mom had been making quilts her whole life.
BUT . . .

I'm stunned speechless!!

What a fabulous gift, something that will be treasured by generations.

What a beautiful sampler quilt. That is quite a project for a first quilt. Some of those blocks are difficult for experienced quilters.

That does it!!! I'm adopting you, your mum, Mark and the kids. Just think - your mum makes absolutely gorgeous quilts, you grow fab veggies and flowers, Mark is the handyman I've always dreamed of having and even your kids can make smashing cookies. When do we sign the papers? Razz

EJ, I was a quiltmaker for almost 20 years and there are some blocks in that quilt that I have never attempted. She is fabulously talented.

The Mariner's Compass (upper left) looks perfect, I have only made one and after two months in solitary confinement decided not to ever try another one Very Happy
The Celtic Knot applique in the center is wonderful. And the Seminole piecing next to the Mariner's Compass is beautiful. It has been a while so some of the block names have escaped my memory but they all look gorgeous.

That is one of the prettiest quilts I have ever seen. My Mom used to quilt also, before her arthiritis got the best of her.

I think that is one of the hardest quilts to put together that I have ever seen.I've seen plenty that was made by my Mom and my Aunt Mary. They were both good quilters but your Mom's is fantastic.First time quilter is unreal.I'd hate to see one I attemped.

Holy cow - if that is what she can manage as a beginner quilt, I would love to see what she cranks out after some practice! Beautiful. A real keeper!

Awww, thanks everyone! I am very proud of her - she is very clever when it comes to crafts and when she puts her mind to it, it is amazing what she can achieve. When I spoke to her about it she said there were some patterns that she will never try again as they took her ages and were done, unpicked, done, thrown away, redone, unpicked, and still she wasn't 100% happy! I adore it and will treasure it.

Oh, and I have put in an order for one each for the children! Well, it keeps her out of trouble.
