During my walk yesterday, I noticed that one of my (spruce?) trees has a couple of branches that are browning. The rest of the tree is still green with the exception of 2 branches that are bare.
    Here's the whole tree.

And here is what is growing on the dead branch

Anyone have any idea what's going on with this tree?
I just remembered that this tree had "fairy rings" around the base in the fall. I don't want to lose this tree. Is there anything I can do?

    Hiya Netty,

I found a few web sites for you that might shed some light on what is happening to your spruce tree. I hope they'll be of some use to you.

If not, then I'd take a bit of the tree with the fungal growth on it to a local nursery or garden centre as they may be able to tell you what is wrong.

Let me know if you manage to find out what the cause of the browning branches is won't you?

In the States we have parish or county agents that are very knowledgable about all of this sort of stuff. Does Canada have anything like that? Or maybe a local university with an agriculture department may have the answer. It is a beautiful tree, I don't blame you for not wanting to loose it.

Thanks for the great links eileen. I just noticed that I had your first link http://www.treehelp.com/info.asp bookmarked. That's a great website!

We have a row of 13 of these trees down the side of our property. I would hate to lose any of them. The owner of the land surrounding us cut down hundreds of trees just after we moved in to enlarge his hay fields. That left us high on a hill with very few trees for protection.
We had 5 old sugar maples when we moved in, 2 of which had to be cut down and another which is on it's way out.
