It’s a long story, but anyway….I’m looking for a particular flower for someone special. All I know is that the first three letters of this flower are “hyd…..” (I’m about 99% sure of this), apparently you can buy them at Lowes or Home Depot, it has a very pleasant fragrance and will have blossoms in May.

Hi mccormij, judging by the letters the first one that springs to mind is "Hydrangea". Ring any bells?

Well, there is hydrilla, but I doubt that Lowes would carry it since it is an aquatic invasive nuisance, almost as bad as hyacinths.

Maybe hypericum or hyacinth or hyssop.
I know you said hyd but apart from hydrangea there aren't any plants that I know of starting with hyd so I just thought I'd throw these in anyway.
Hope you manage to get what you are looking for.

Thanks for all your help. I'm thinking it may be a hydrangea based on what you guys have said, although I was just told by someone on another forum that hydrangeas don't have a scent...is this true? If it is, then the flower I'm looking for is definitely not a hydrangeas (I'm for sure that whatever I'm looking for has a very pleasant fragrance)
P.S. I forgot the mention before that it would have blossoms in May and that it's a type of plant that would be in a persons front yard (in other words, not aquatic or wild etc.)

I've never had an hydrangea that has any scent but for the life of me I can't think what else it could be.
Does it grow from a bulb?
Is it a shrub?
Do you know what colour of flowers it has?
What shape of flowers it has.
How tall is it?
Is it evergreen?
I really don't know that there are any other plants with the letters you've given us.

Could well be, Hyacinth blooms in spring is renowned for it's sweet fragrance.

sorry I probably should have done this sooner and I hate to keep bugging everyone about this but this will probably clear things up a little.
Basically I have a this letter and I need to identify the flower mentioned in it here's the excerpt "...smell a hyd [the word was never finished that's all the letters I have because the person who wrote this wasn't sure how to spell it so it could be hyd.. or hya... I don't know]. Whether you find some in somebody's yard or go to Lowes in their flower dept., you have to smell them because I can guarantee you it will be one of the best five seconds of your life."
The letter was dated in May so I just assume its in blossom at that time.
Again I hate to draw this out and if this doesn't clear anything up I think I'll go with a hyacinth because the consensus seems to be that a hydrangea has little or no fragrance
Thanks, everyone, you've been a big help

I think you're on the right track with Hyacinth.

Definately sounds like hyacinths to me too. They have the lovliest scent imagineable. Better get a move on though if you want to have them in bloom this year!!
Here's a website for you to look at as it gives you lots of info about growing these lovely flowers.
