|
Every year, we get a Flicker (bird) that likes to stand outside our bedroom window and drum on the gutters- he returned today! And now he has expanded his repertoir to include the cap on our chimney! Seems early to be drumming for a mate, guess he's had a lonely winter, lol!

Mary do you know which kind of woodpecker your flicker is by any chance? I'd love to see a piccie of him. I hope the drumming doesn't go on all day as I would imagine it could get a little tiresome. It certainly does seem early to be looking for a mate but as you say he's probably lonely .... or oversexed!!!

He sounds desperate Critter, we've gotta hook him up pronto. Post his photo on a couple of dating websites and see if he gets any interest. Poor fellow

I have Flickers here, but they don't winter over. They should be coming back in March or early April!

Our local woodpecker showed up this morning too. Our neighbors have a large dead tree in their yard where he hangs out every spring and summer. I think it is a Red-bellied variety.
I enjoy hearing him drumming on the tree, can't say I would like him as much if he became enamoured with our house.

Here is a pic of the type of Flickers that I have and I imagine it the same as Critters. They are large birds, about twice the size of a Jay.

WOW what a beauty and quite big too. I think it's about the same size as the Green Woodpeckers we have over here. Thanks for the piccie. I love the red 'arrow' shape on the back of the birds head and the yellow on its wings!!!

I had a flicker the other day pecking on the shutters outside my kitchen window. I just love all the birds I'm seeing lately.

Looks like your flickers have yellow feather shafts? Ours are orange shafted, here's a pic I found of one in the eastern side of the state

Wish his images weren't copyrighted, that one would make a fantastic painting. Might refer to it when I'm painting, though...
Have had several purple finches lately, too!

Isn't he a beauty ?
They haven't returned yet but when they do I'll try to take one at work on the light pole by my house.

Oh I just love to see piccies like these!!! We all take our birds for granted sometimes forgetting that others in different countries will be fascinated with them as they are so different from their own. Purple finches - now there's another bird I'd really like to see.
Thank you Muddy, Critter Painter and Glenda for your smashing piccies. Keep them coming please.

Our birds have finally returned after the storm. We have hundreds of golden and some blue finches raiding the thistle feed seeder. They look like flying easter eggs
