I moved in this house very new. So don't know what type of grass they planted.They are still green. I want to dig up some spots in my front yard for a small patch of flowers. Can I do that or will it spoil the entire yard? Also how do I go about doing that? Should I just till the soil?
Sorry if my questions sound silly. I am very new to gardening.

Tins never apologise for wanting to learn. We all started out knowing nothing about gardening after all. 
I plant bulbs into my lawn - snowdrops crocus's, daffodils etc and all you need to do is remove a patch of lawn in one piece. Pop your bulbs into the soil at the correct depth. Relay the piece of lawn and wait until the flowers appear. They will spread year by year and brighten your lawn for you.

I agree about the bulbs, they perk things up early, before there's much in the way of mowing to be done. We had what my dad called "lawn daisies" where I grew up, sorry don't know what they really were but I loved them. And blue flax is really nice scattered through a lawn.
