I'm hoping to start screenwriting at some stage, but don't know if it is possible to transfer the work I do on the Word Processor of my computer into 'My Documents'?

Is it possible to do this, therefore, being able to retrieve the work each time to add more to it ?

Thanks

C.J.

I'll be interested to see other answers to this question, that is to say,
answers posted by people who really know how to make the most of the technology.

Still being pretty new with my laptop,
I just either type up the documents I what to keep directly in 'notepad',
or I copy and paste them into 'notepad' and then stick them into 'my documents' that way.

Not very professional, I'm sure, but it works for me. *lol*

For me creating folders on the desktop is the way to go. I've never understood the 'My Documents' folder, by that I mean the fact that it is tucked away a couple of folder levels down. Pointless really (in my mind).

C.J I would suggest creating a folder on the desktop and save documents to that instead of 'My Documents'. Having it on the desktop means it is always readily available and in your face.

On a related topic I use Textpad for all my text documents (including writing code for GardenStew through to rough jotting). If I need to apply formatting (bolding, italics, tables etc...) I will resort to the dreaded Word document (yuck!!!, I really don't need a paperclip telling me how to write my document Smile).

Does this help C.J? I could write about the subject of computer time savers for hours so feel free to ask more questions Very Happy

Thankyou

I've titled a document and saved it on the desktop.

Does this folder hold a specific amount of information (pages) and can I keep adding more ?

A standard screenplay can be 100 pages in length, but if adding notes, references, etc., could amount to much more.

I appreciate any help and additional suggestions you may have on this matter.

This aspect of computer operation is completely new to me.

Thanks again

C.J.

Zuzu

Please could you tell me what 'notepad' is on the computer and its function ?

Is it the same as the above, or does it afford another possibilty of storing work separately ?

Thankyou

C.J.

C.J if you right-click on the desktop and choose New and then Folder you will see a yellow folder icon appear on your desktop. You can name it whatever you want, in this case 'Screenplays' would be an appropriate name for the folder. Save your Word documents into this Screenplays folder. The reason I suggest putting files in a folder instead of just on your desktop is that it the desktop can get cluttered quite fast. If you have a folder you will only have one icon on your desktop Smile

A folder can hold more screenplays than you could write in a lifetime so don't worry about it getting full up.

Some computer operations can seem quite tricky at first C.J but with a little practice they can become as subconscious as breathing Wink

CJ, I have Windows XP and I found 'notepad' in the program list.
(click - 'start' -> 'all programs' -> 'accessories' -> 'notepad')

It's function (at least for me), is just what it sounds like,
a really handy and simply formatted spot (I do best with "simple" Rolling Eyes )
to make my own notes or documents, or to copy and paste internet documents,
which I can then notate, and add to my own files, for future reference.

When I've written (or modified) to my heart's content,
I simply click to close the notepad page and it will then ask if I want to save the file,
if I click 'yes' it will then allow me to title the document and it goes directly to 'my documents',
where I can access it, and change it as often as I please.

Zuzu

Thankyou.

May I also ask - When you say 'copy and paste' internet documents, what does that mean ? Confused

I feel as though I've just arrived from the Dark Ages - I know nothing about technology.

*lol* Not to worry, CJ, I am still brushing the cave dust outta my hair, for real!
So I may well be using confusing (or downright incorrect) terminology. Mr. Green

But, for instance, an 'internet document' that I might want to keep for reference,
could be plant growing instructions that I might find here at the Stew,
or elsewhere on the net ( Confused It's pretty much all about the plants, for me).

I would just left click to highlight the portion I wanted to save to my files,
then right click -> 'copy' -> open a page of notepad
(either a new/blank page, or perhaps an existing one that I wanted to add the info to) ->
right click again -> 'paste'.

I've been spending the last week personalising my computer, changing desktop background, screensaver, opening new folders, saving items, etc., etc.

Just been experimenting with the 'copy and paste' aspect. Great fun. Got the hang of it now. Very Happy

Thanks again for your assistance. Wink

It's great when you start to get the hang of things C.J. You feel like a whole new person to have stuff like this under control.

Of course you can save it to documents, I wrote a novel, and 5 stories for children, on my word processor they are saved in my documents and also burned on a CD I open my documents and it has a few folders in there saying my E-books or childrens stories etc. Your word processor should ask you if you want to save it of course answer yes...

Glad you're having fun with it, C.J.
I only recently learned about making 'screen shots' Embarassed
and I've been having a blast with that, Laughing
of course, I'm pretty simple-minded, so I'm very easily amused. Rolling Eyes
