I just checked my Daffs to see if any had opened and found one that will not open this year.
Why?....because some heartless albeit probably hungry, critter ate the bud before it could open.
I know we have squirrels, good lord what yard doesn't have squirrels but they have never eaten my blooms before. And whatever it was only ate one, left about six others alone.

I always thought squirrels and other critters didn't eat Daffodils Toni. Maybe that's why only one was eaten...they didn't like the taste?

Hope whatever it was has learned it's lesson and will leave the rest alone, Toni.

Last spring, I watched my neighbor's goofy dog
snap the buds off of about a half a dozen Daffodils,
Shocked so strange!! She didn't eat them, just seemed to enjoy
snapping them off and letting them drop, Rolling Eyes wacky pup.

Clipshears (earwigs) eat flower buds Toni - they attack my clematis and anemones every year. Sad I don't think that's what got yours though as they usually don't just eat into the one. Daffs are poisonous to most animals so I wonder what it could have been?

If it's earwigs, you can see them after dark with your flashlight. They do eat flowers, vegetable plants, etc. I battle with them every year. Dooley

It does look rather like the damage I get from earwigs Toni. I hope you can catch the little blighters before they do any more damage. The birds around here can also be pretty destructive and, strangely, always seem to prefer yellow flowers. Confused

I don't know much that likes daffodils. They are one thing that the critters leave alone.

Toni, do you have a county extension agent you can contact? Your state university should have an ag department with extension agents for each county. I am always bothering our agent via email, and he always faithfully answers me. I don't know what I would do without him.
