|
This was a project that worked out so well last year, I just had to do it again.
I bought a variety of salad greens the other day and planted them up this morning.
I took over this old barrow last year when hubby and I replaced it with
a bigger, sturdier model. I found that having a portable planter
for the lettuces meant that I could give them sun early in the season,
before it gets too hot and intense, then wheel the whole thing into a location
that gets dappled shade at mid-day, extending my 'salad days' by a month or more.
There are a few more things I want to add now, like nasturtiums and cilantro.
Then, as the weather gets hot and the lettuces go by,
I'll replace them with heat lovers, like peppers and parsley
and perhaps a mini tomato vine that can trail over the edges.

Great idea Zuzu and such variety of colors makes it quite attractive as well as functional.

I wish I'd thought of that idea!! So much easier than the pots I use that have wheeled stands. I must keep an eye out for a couple of old wheelbarrows.

Zuzu, that is the cleverest idea.
The bird bath in the background of the first picture ....it's made from clay flower pots and a clay tray, right? What is the ball in the middle of the water tray? That is really pretty.

Thanks everyone, I'm glad you all think it's a good idea, too.
You should have seen hubby's eyes roll when I first told him what I had in mind,
but I think he became a convert when he realized how easy it was to grab a handful
of salad stuff at suppertime.
Yep, Toni, two glazed terracotta pots for the base and a glazed saucer
with a glazed orb I found at one of the cheapie stores I haunt,
I'm pretty sure it was Big Lots,
I thought the froggie was cute.

Well that is such a clever idea. It rapidly gets too hot for salad here and that would be a good way around that. Also by moving it around maybe the aphids would get confused!

What an absolutely fantastic idea Zuzu. I think there is an opening for "Zuzu Mobile Gardens ©". Just think of the possibilities. Joking aside I think you have inspired more than one member with this.

Zuzu, love the lettuce planter. What a great idea! There are a couple of old wheelbarrows dumped by the wayside at our allotment site....I shall have to ask around and see if I can claim them! And I LOVE your birdbath. Will have to see if I can do something similar. You have such great ideas!
