Hello everyone.
While in China and Taiwan I saw a lot of nuts like this at flower markets and I bought a few. They were kinda large nuts (bigger than chestnuts) and light brown.
The seller told me to peel off the brown skin and plant it half way in.
I did. And I had two seedlings. One grew much better than the other one. Even became about half meter tall.
This winter I was surprise to see some small buds, which grew to be white flowers and then turned to orange and then red. Like in the pictures.
It's not doing well in my room. The leaves are turning yellow.
Flowers are OK. They look like a bunch of fraesias to me.
Anyone knows what kind of tree it is? I would like to know what it is. Flowers are very pretty. Would like to know what it likes and what it doesn't.
HELP!
Calin

http://www.naturehills.com/new/product/productdetails.aspx?proname=Chinese+Chestnut

go to this website, click on 'View More Pictures' under the tree picture on the left side and see if those leaves or nuts look like what you have. I know the flower color is different from the description on this page but may there are different kinds with other colored flowers.

hi guys... well at least you tried. When in Taiwan I saw them everywhere, every flower shop has them. Either as nuts to be planted or as little seedlings.
You imagine that I tried to find out what it is but all signs were in Chinese thus useless, and my friend/translator could not tell me what it was.
I guess I will try to send a pic to my friend in Taiwan and ask him to ask a seller what it is in latin. Hopefully they will know it. If not... will just wait for someone here who knows.
The flowers are really beautiful... no fragrance but looks.
Would like to know why the leaves are turning yellow. Anyway, in a few weeks will repot it in a bigger clay pot.
Thanks for trying guys !

Calin

So glad you discovered what your plant is Calin. I looked up all the Chinese trees and couldn't determine what it was. Now I know I should have been checking the Australian ones instead!!!!! Rolling Eyes

Calin ~ So glad you were able to ID this beauty,
I hope that you can bring her back to good health.
Thank you for letting us know what you found out,
It's a plant that I had never seen or heard of before. Cool Very cool!

kat ~ Your plant appears to be Epiphyllum oxypetallum, Very Happy
actually a member of the cactus family.
The common names include "Night-Blooming Cereus"
and "Queen of the Night" as well as "Orchid Cactus",
though it is actually no relation to the orchid family.

Have you ever enjoyed the fantastic white flowers?

Zuzu, I have a Queen of the Night that I got from a job site as a cutting. It took 3 years before it got it's one and only bloom, but wow was it worth the wait!! It hasn't flowered since!

They really are something special, aren't they Netty? Very Happy

I find that mine blooms better when quite potbound,
so it doesn't surprise me to learn that it took yours several years before the first flower.
