|
I hope someone can help me out with this...A few years back I got a starter dough that you keep adding to each day and was able to share it with family and friends, to make differnt types of baked items. I seem to recall it having the name of Herman Starter base. If I am not mistaken, it has yeast and flour as the main ingredients. If anyone has had this before or can share the recipe for the starter of reciepes made from it I would really appricate it.
Was mentioning it to a few friends the other day and they would love to try it also...

I have a recipe called Sherwoods Dough.
1 tsp sugar
2 cups warm water
1 pkg dry active yeast
2 cups all purpose flour
DAY 1
Dissolve sugar in 1/2 cup warm water in large glass bowl. Sprinkle yeast into water and let stand 10 minutes. Stir in remaining warm water and flour. Beat until smooth. Cover bowl tightly with plastic wrap and leave Sherwood overnight at room temperature.
DAY 2
1 cup all purpose flour
1 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar
Add flour, milk and sugar to Sherwood. Stir well. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate
DAY 3 and 4
Stir Sherwood until smooth. Cover tightly and refrigerate.
DAY 5
Repeat feeding as on day 2
DAY 6,7,8,9,and 10
Stir well each day. By day 10 Sherwood should have grown to at least 4 cups.
Give 1 cup to a friend who starts at day 2 with him. Use the remaining for your own baking. When he gets down to 1 cup, feed him again as on day 2-10.

Amish Friendship Starter
Mix 1 cup milk, 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar.
Do not overmix, mixture should be lumpy. Use a glass bowl or jar and cover with towel
Day 1 and 2 - Do Nothing
Day 3 - Stir with wooden spoon
Day 4 and 5 - Do nothing
Day 6 - pour into larger container add 1 cup milk, 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar, stir well - leave lumpy- cover.
Day 7 - do nothing
Day 8 - stir with wooden spoon
Day 9 - Do nothing
Day 10 - add 1 cup milk, 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar. Stir well. Divide into three containers.
Keep 1 container and give away the other two with a copy of the recipe. You can also use one of the containers to start all over again.
Basic Cake from starter
Approximately 1.5 cups of starter
Add 1 cup oil
1/2 cup milk
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 large box vanilla or banana flavored instant pudding
1 cup chopped nuts optional
Mix, pour into two well greased bread pans.
Bake at 325 degrees until done.
I would use the same basic recipe but add about 1/2 cup baking cocoa and chocolate chips and bake in muffin pans.

Hello, Beechance;
HERMAN SOURDOUGH STARTER:
2 C all-purpose white flour
2 c milk
1 c sugar
1/3 c warm water
2 Tbsp (2 pkg)Active dry Yeast
----------------------------
Stir 1 tablespoon sugar into the warm water
Sprinkle yeast over this and let stand in a warm place about 10 minutes.
----------------------------
Mix milk, sugar, flour and yeast mixture in a large plastic or glass container(about 4-5 qt.size). Stir, using only a wooden or plastic spoon or paddle since metal objects retard Herman's natural growth......
Cover loosely or place glass plate over top of container so Herman can breath. Herman doubles, even triples at times of vigorous rising. Place Herman in a warm place overnight. Next day refrigerate, loosely covered, and try to stir each day.........
-------------------------
Yeast-type mold may begin to form on the surface after 48 hours if you don't stir daily. On the 5th day, measure out 1 cup Herman for yourself to bake with. Measure out another cup to give a friend as a gift, provided you can part with it.....
------------------------
Then feed the Herman you have left with:
1 cup all-purpose white flour,
1 cup milk, 1/2 cup sugar.
Stir well.
Keep in refrigerator in the same large container, loosely covered. Stir every day. On the 10th day, if you wish, measure out another cup of Herman to give to a friend. Because he has grown, you should have enough to bake a Herman recipe plus start the process of feeding him once again. If you are not using Herman often, just add a tablespoon of sugar every 5th day and continue as long as forever.
-------------------------------
That's from my recipe files........ lol.. Hank
