I'm so glad that you and the kiddos are all okay,
 sorry that you had such a frightening experience.
It doesn't sound like either the jeep or the deer won that contest.
There are many such accidents here in NC, too,
their habitat is being transected with so many roads,
that the poor things can't move around at all without having to cross roads,
and they just DO NOT understand the concept of thousands of pounds of metal
traveling at high rates of speed.

Whoa, Polly, glad you are all okay.
We don't see deer on the city streets, but there was a large bull on the loose not long ago that happens every once in a while. Sometimes we do see 'possums or armadillos, those we try to miss but squirrels in the road are targets.
When I lived in south Florida you had to be careful driving out in the boonies at night because the aligators would cross the roads from one canal to another.

An Emu??? Wow. Never heard of anyone running into one of them 
Polly I'm sure glad all is ok. I know it can shake you up pretty bad, especially with a car load of kids. When I was in junior high our youth group was headed to bible camp and our van hit a deer. That poor youth leader had a van full of girls!! Can you imagine? That poor man. Needless to say we were late getting to camp but it gave us all something to talk about!

Just found out today that there have been abandoned dogs in the area that have really been chasing the deer and have them on the run.
The Jeep is now at the collison shop - haven't heard a time frame on the repair. Insurance company was easy to deal with so far. And around here, the police oficer doesn't even ask to see the vehicle - they take so many car/deer reports.

I'm so glad you all were all right. Deer are a major road menace here also. Their numbers are increasing and they have nowhere to go. I hate to go out at night as a result.

Glad to hear you are okay. A couple of years ago my friend bought his first 'nice' car, a Saab. The second or third night he was driving it he hit a deer head on. The deer flipped over and crushed the roof and windshield post, the car had under 300 miles on it. It caused over 10K in damage but he was not hurt. It took months to get it fixed.
From State Farm Insurance Company here are a few tips to avoid Deer-Car accidents (some of these are a little simple  )
Tips to avoid deer accidents:
1) Be attentive when driving! And Slow Down!
2) Use high-beam headlights when driving in deer territory to increase your vision and will increase your time to react to a deer hiding on the roadside who decides to jump in front of your car.
3) The use of car-mounted 'deer whistles,' do not seem to affect deer and may result in drivers being less aware. These devices don't work! Watch out!
4) If a collision with a deer is unavoidable, it is usually best not to swerve to avoid it, brake and hold the wheel straight. Turning the wheel to avoid the deer may result in a worse accident with another car, or cause the car to spin out of control resulting a in much more serious crash.
