I bought some sedums the other day. My intent was to plant them along with some hen and chicks, my variegated jade plant, and another succulent I have. I am putting them in a fan grate, the stand fan kind, and they have a domed grate over the front. I am going to lash the grate onto the bottom cross piece of the stand. I will line it with spagnum moss and fill it with cacti soil. Will the sedums get to big for this planting? The grate is about 18 inches in diameter. One of the sedums is dragon blood. The other is edged in pink, but I don't recall the name. I also have an ice plant I want to put in it. Any advice or similar experiences would be appreciated.

Sharon I think your plants will do really well in your fan grate. Sedums have shallow root systems as they prefer to grow over things like rocks etc so I don't see them being a problem at all. The link photograph you posted is great isn't it? Who would have thought that a dish drainer could look sooooo good.

Your sedums will LOVE that. I have many shallow sedum gardens.Hypertufa of course. I love those Juicy Guys. Good drainage a must.

I have not tried sedum in planters - it does great in the garden. Would the sedums winter over in planters here in Michigan?

I love the little spiky guys in there Bethie, what are they? I think I am going to put a green and white striped cacti I found for some height, and my jade of course.
I don't know if they would overwinter in Michigan Polly, could you bring them inside.

Thanks everyone for the support. Now I just have to get off my bottom and get it rigged up and planted. Is full Louisiana sun too much for them?

Hi Sharon! I sure missed everyone!!
I have my sedums in my shade garden. They get some morning sun but are shaded from the hot afternoon sun.

I think I will do that Julie, I had a couple last year and left them in full sun and they didn't do well.

Cajunbelle, I don't know what most of these sedums are. I collect them so people give them to me unnamed and hubby brings some home from jobs.

Mine seem to grown in the sun and in the shade. I just have never tried them in containers but may this year.
