Hello all! I came across GardenStew while looking for an interior design forum.
For a month or so now, I've been pondering a color scheme/carpet dilemma. Next year I will be moving into a new apartment that has, unfortunately, a pretty garish colored carpet. It is a mix of tan and green industrial carpet, but is mostly green, not tan (the green exists in the form of huge overlapping diamonds.) The green is a dark moss/forest green, and the walls are all white. I am trying to find furniture for the apartment before moving in in a month or so, and am having trouble thinking of a color scheme that would work with the carpet and yet be vibrant and inviting, not bland.
Suggestions that people have given me already include: dark purple, orange, and dark brown, not together. I am actually a fan of dark purple, but the other colors I find rather depressing.
Plus, I was hoping to have brighter colors (when I thought the carpet would be a tan or a brown, I was leaning towards a red couch with black accents and light birch wood tables) to make the apartment a bit cheerier. I figure I can put in some plants to even out the green, but am not sure what to put in between (couch, rugs, end tables, coffee tables, etc.)
Any and all suggestions are welcome and GREATLY appreciated.

I have never lived in an apartment before, and am throwing this question out there: is it possible to change the carpet? If it is possible, about how much would this cost in a two bedroom apartment?

Hello Skippy and welcome to GardenStew.I agree with Frank a pic would be nice.Although if the carpet does not have much tan..if you were to get tan couch it would bring out the tan in the carpet.I agree with the plants also.As for the walls,they have so many colors to choose from these days so seeing a pic of the carpet would help.Hope you get it all decided and worked out before you move in

Hi everyone, thanks for the quick responses!
I do have a picture of the carpet, although it is on my cell phone at the moment and I'm not sure how to get it off just yet. I'll work on that and post up a picture as soon as I can.
As for the walls... in an apartment, I don't think that we are allowed to paint the walls a different color? Although if we are, a light yellow might be nice I think =)

Hi Skippy, welcome to the Stew from north Texas.
Before painting walls or changing carpet you need to check with the apartment manager, some of the do not let tenants make major changes like that. If there is a chance that the carpet is old and worn, they might be looking at changing it soon and you could have a say in the color...same goes for the wall colors.
Being an industrial carpet it is probably not well padded, you could buy a Sisal, Jute or Sweetgrass room size rug to cover the carpet, then your color choices will expand greatly.

I managed to get the picture I have of the carpet online. This is a fairly good representation of the carpet, although it has more of a green tinge than this picture shows. Truthfully I haven't actually seen it in person for a few weeks.

I had a little bit of a play around with colours using http://www.colorblender.com/ and came up with the following. I tried to get the first colour to show the green I think you are describing (correct?).
The tool says these are complementing colours. Any sparks of inspiration from these Skippy?

Hi there Skippy and WELCOME to our forums. I think Toni's idea of room sized seagrass rugs is a splendid idea as they are inexpensive and cover a multitude of sins. They are a nice, neutral shade too which will give you far more scope when choosing a colour scheme more to you own personal taste. What colour are the walls in your apartment by the way?

the walls are white. as far as whites go, however, this one isn't very inviting (very bright) =/
