|
I was on the allotment today digging up a few weeds and potatoes that have started to grow from tubers I missed last year. As I unearthed the spuds, look what I found - the first new potatoes of 2007. My darling had them for his supper with his pork chop, home grown cauliflower and home grown French beans.

Looks good mmmmmmmmm!!!
In my banana tree I threw some old potatoes for compost. Now I have a very large potatoe bush (just leaves) growing. How long does it take. Do I dig for them? How do I know there ready.

WOW EJ those tatties look rather tasty!!! Ian wants to know what kind they are as he's getting right into veggie growing this year. I think all the piccies of your fresh produce last year started him off.

Yum yum. I love how the skin just washes right off these new spuds.

I always eat the skin on new potatoes, yum!
My parents are potato farmers (amongst other types of farming) so our shed is FULL of potatoes come picking time. Your back may suffer during this time but those spuds (slang for potatoes) are worth it.

Eileen, I think they must be Red Duke of York. They were creamy and sweet and delicious!
Gizmo, over in the UK we wait roughly 12 weeks plus before digging after planting. With early pots we dig just as the flowers are developing. Maincrop potatoes are usually left to die down and then they are dug, but I tend to dig them as I need them.
If your potato plant has been growing for a while, have a root around gently beneath, if you come across tubers, then you know it is time to dig. My children love spud digging time, they think it is like digging for treasure!

Digging up potatoes is something my kids race to help me with! This year I'm planning on doubling the amount of potatoes that I usually grow.

I used to love digging for potatoes as a kid. Yeah, it was like digging up buried treasure.
Mine aren't even in the ground yet. They're sitting on top of my TV sprouting.
