Is there anyone using the new Windows Vista, I just got my first new computer in 8 years, and it came with the vista version of Windows. It's like I need to relearn a lot of how to use it. No operation manual, just here it is have fun. I'm having problems getting my old printer to operate, which I have heard is not uncommon. I'm sure that in time I'll get it going. Otherwise I like it. Just wondering if others have had good or bad experiences with Vista.

I've enough problems getting my head around all the new things my daughter installs on this machine!!!  I suppose, one day, I'll have to consider getting a computer with Windows Vista but I'm quite happy with the XP I have at the moment.

I've heard a few horror stories about 'Windows Vista' but that is generally the case with any 'NEW' thing. Keep us posted on your troubles and trials especially the solutions. Hank

I have XP Tom but the early reports I hear coming in about Vista is that it is not a huge leap from XP but that it is more paranoid about security (which can be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it). Personally I love XP but I'm sure Vista is just as good (really hard to take a step backward when releasing a new version of an operating system, I'd be very suprised if it was inferior).

Just a quick update, I have been using Vista now for a while, and it, like most other new things, just needs some time to get used to. I like it, and have all my peripherals operating. It does however, interrupt my work from time to time, to get it's own updates, and each time needs to shut down and restart. I presume that there is some way to get it to ask first, I just haven't found it yet. I just wish that they had provided an instruction manual.

Tom, our daughters new computer came with Vista. She is really good at fiddling around and finding out how to do things and was able to find a "disable updates" button in the control panel or my computer or somewhere. She really doesn't remember but if she does I will let you know where it is.

Calomaar, don't you have help and support at your START ? which should tell you all you need to know about the OS, I have it on XP.

my daughters new computer ( that I am using..grin) has vista and we like it alot..there were some glitches at first like there always is with new programs..like it not compatible with some of the game software..but I think they have worked most of it out already. Yes they have a help topic for those that need it, and you can have updates set up so that you can load them when it is convientient for you. Also, when it starts to upload the "updates" you can disable it by clicking on the icon in your toolbar.
So far we are happy with vista, not too many "great: changes, but worth the use if it came with your system.

I have found that if I right click on the “computer” Icon you get a window filled with things to adjust, and I found a way to get windows to ask before uploading updates. I also changed the start window back to the one in XP. I feel much better now.

We're evaluating it at work (I work in IT). I'm running Vista on a Lenovo Thinkpad and it's relatively unstable compared to XP (I upgraded from XP). We're also running an HP laptop with a fresh load of Vista and it seems stable.
I didn't find it difficult to use, but I work on computers all day, every day. The first day there were a few minor frustrations -- things weren't where they were in XP -- but I found everything and eventually got the right drivers for my printers.
My recommendation is to only get Vista if it comes on a new computer. Your old computer probably won't run it well and the upgrade process doesn't seem to result in a stable version of Vista, at least in my experience.

The way I see it, if your current computer is running XP, and is fairly new, don't go for vista. By the time you need to upgrade to a new computer, Microsoft will have dumped Vista for the next "new idea". Rumor has it that Vista's replacement is only about two years away...

Hmmm I'd have to disagree Dan. Prior to release Vista had been in development for 5 years. Microsoft has essentially bet the house on this one. I would say however that Microsoft will release a service pack for Vista within 2 years.
An interesting piece of news recently regarding Vista is that due to customer demand Dell had to go back to selling PCs with XP installed after they had stopped it to sell only Vista-installed PCs.
