Oh you have some really lovely trees Susie. I have a holly tree and a magnolia too but I don't have an 'orchid tree.' It's beautiful. What is the bright green, fan-like plant in the first photograph please?

You are so lucky to get to grow this stuff.
About the Fan Palm. Sure is a cutie. There are a lot of different types. I have a Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta) that kind of looks like that.

I looked up Mexican Fan Palm and it grows to 100 feet, so that probably is not it.
Mine is in a pot and is only about 6 feet tall.

It depends what part of Texas. Some of the Fan Palm are hardy to Zone 8. I try and 'cheat' zones around here all the time and have found siting the plant to be the key to success. I have a lot of micro climates in my garden. Mine has been in a pot for about 10 years and I just take in during the winter.

Love that orchid tree, I will have to see if they will overwinter here, or I could grow it in a pot and cover it during freezes.
