Try Nature's Miracle to get rid of the smell -- just soak the area with it. Then use Feliway if you think the cat may return and mark the area.

I used to work for Stanley Steemer carpet cleaners @ the corporate center. They have an odor product called Odor Out. It comes in a qt. spray bottle. I swear by it. Our cat peed in my lounge chair when we first got it. Used their stain remover and the Odor Out and that was the last of the urine smell. Just search for Stanley Steemer for their web site. You can buy it on line and have it shipped to you.

I've tried three different things to get smells out other than carpet cleaning.
1) Fabreeze or 3M has a new carpet odor neutralizer that worked great on milk spilled by my kids.
2) Lots of fresh air
3) Hidden dryer sheets to cover up some of the smell.

I have used all types of the fancy name brand animal odor things for a few problems at housing sites and we found out the best thing to use is Lime. It absorbs the smell and you can buy a bag at your local hardware store for relatively cheap. It is also easy to spread and stays for years.

Vinegar does help to remove odors. I have used vinegar in a spray bottle, and sprayed around my porch to keep cats away. If they start returning to the area, you know it's time to spray again.
