I love to hear wind chimes. First off I feel blessed I can hear Laughing YET.

Wind chimes have long held a significant presence in Feng Shui. As Feng Shui cures or just a decorative item that greets a person after a long days work. Those who treasure a soothing melody to lullaby them to sleep often prize their gentle sounds. The 6-Rod Metal Wind Chime is used to weaken the malignant stars of Black 2, which causes sickness and Yellow 5, which causes mishaps and accidents. Hang this wind chime on a hook attached to the ceiling. Some Feng Shui practitioners advocate placing the 6-rod metal wind chime to deflect incoming sha qi from T-junctions and offending electric poles facing the main door. Hung in long hallways, it slows down fast-flowing ‘chi’ and on an exposed beam, reduces the harmful effects caused by the beam.

In the days before weather forecasts were available, weatherwise farmers, fishermen and others could make good short-term forecasts with a knowledge of local weather patterns and a few observations. Wind speed and direction are generally important indicators for use in such forecasts. Thus, by properly exposing a set, or several sets, of wind chimes to maximize their activation by a specific wind direction or directions, it is possible to hear the general direction of the wind. With several different sets of chimes strategically placed, different wind directions can be distinguished. For example, a high-pitched wind chime on the west side and a low pitched one on the east should distinguish between a west and east wind. In addition, the rate at which the clapper strikes the chimes can give a qualitative estimate of the wind speed.
Often early in the morning I have heard one or more of my wind chimes singing in the breeze. Thus, with eyes still closed I was able to know what manner of weather I would awaken to. Some mornings, I could keep my eyes closed and drift back to sleep, knowing that this was not a good morning for mowing the lawn.

I've always loved the sound of wind chimes, they have an immediate soothing effect that is rarely found elsewhere in our daily lives.

I had a quick look through the links that you supplied Al and it looks entirely possible to build them yourself. I never knew of the Feng Shui connection and I certainly didn't realise that they could be used as weather predictors (don't know why I didn't realise that before).

Have you built any?

BTW I have moved this topic to the Home Improvements forum Wink

Home inprovement???

Yes I built some myself. I used 1/2 copper tubing which I saw many placessites said couldn't be done. Glad i did it before I saw those places that said you couldn't. There was one place how ever that had the formula to get the right tones from copper.
I also built one of those pyeramid shaped ones about the size of a cow bell.
I did all the research as I want to make one of thos giant ones this winter.

Very Happy Al

I am a devout coffee drinker and prefer percolators over drip pots. I buy those pots from thrift and junque stores so I can get the old styles and try to keep a few on hand for parts.
Then comes the "what do I do with the innards" question.....and this is the answer. It doesn't make a musical chime in the wind but it is a pleasant sound.

Al, that is very interesting about the wind chime as weather predictor. I have always liked the fact that I can hear when the wind picks up without being outside, but had never thought to place them so I could tell which way the wind was blowing. Now we all have a practical reason for adding to our collections Very Happy
