I have been pulling what I thought was bindweed coming up in my front yard. Then I noticed that the leaves look a lot like my clematis in the back yard. No flowers yet on what I have been pulling, now its in the grass in the back and very close to my clematis. Are they in the same family? I don't mind pulling in the grass. The problem is I hate to pull baby clematis where I want clematis but, if bindweed gets tangled in the clematis I'll never get it out. I can try to post a pic. if you need one I'm just not very good at it. I had to have help with my ID pic. Thanks for any help.

It would help to see a photo,
I know that several of my Clematis do self sow each year.

And to answer another part of your question,no they are not in the same family. Clematis are in the same family as Buttercups and Anemone etc. whereas Bindweed is in the Convolvulus family. Easy enough to tell which you have, if you dig up some of the roots, Clematis roots are thin and wiry and most often yellow. Bindweed roots are white and pencil thick.

I think I might have this pic thing figured out so here goes nothing. I only hope the pics come out so you can see something.
clematis

bindweed
bindweed
I know the leaves do look a little different in the pics. but I do have some that are forked on the back like the bindweed they are just hard to see. I think I will go check there roots. It seems to me that what I have been pulling does have the larger white roots. Thanks again for all the help.
