Just in case I should suddenly vanish,
I wanted to let you all know that my laptop is apparently
having some sort of deep psychological problems.

I hadn't had any sort of problems with it for a long time,
but earlier this afternoon it went totally schizoid on me
for hours it just would NOT cooperate with me . . . AT ALL!

I have no idea what got up it's nose, nor do I have any idea
why it seems to functioning correctly again now.
I also don't know how long it will function correctly.

So, if I go missing, now you know why.

Zuzu, what signs/symptoms is it showing? Maybe someone here can shed some light on what the problem may be.

Oh Zuzu I hope it doesn't quit on you! I hate it when we have computer problems! It makes for a sad miserable bunch of people around here! Hopefully someone here can help as Frank has suggested!

Hope your laptop is fixed for good Zuzu.
And if you are anything like me, it will make you a wee bit cranky not being able to visit the stew!

It was totally bonkers! Never seen anything like it.

Last night when I shut it down, all was fine,
but from the moment I turned it on this afternoon it was psycho.

It was SUPER slow, programs kept freezing up,
then it would go entirely unresponsive,
I couldn't even use Ctrl/Alt/Del.
I kept having to shut down manually.
It refused to let me do a system restore.

It was like it was possessed,
I really thought I had "caught" a bad bug,
but Norton says no, and I can't imagine where I would have picked anything up,
I don't go anywhere more exciting than the gardening forums.

This all went on for several hours,
I was emotionally preparing myself for a system recovery ordeal this weekend.
But, everything seems to have spontaneously returned to normal . . . for now.

I think it had an electronic mini-stroke.

My first thoughts are that I may have been a hardware problem Zuzu but if it seems to have snapped back then maybe not.

Can you try this for a curious gnome. I'm assuming you use Windows (XP?). If your system starts running super slow again hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and click on the Processes tab on the Windows Task Manager that appears. Click on CPU to sort the list and take note of the top 5 entries in the list. Let me know about them and I will perform some detective work for you.

Thank you Frank, yes to Windows XP,
I will make a note of these instructions (in fact, I will print them out to keep at hand)
and follow them next time it gets bogged down
Confused . . . . . if the laptop will allow me to.

It was so odd, I've never had Ctrl+Alt+Del fail to respond before,
that really shocked me! Shocked

Have you got Spybot: Search and Destroy installed Zuzu? If not I highly recommend you download it and give it a run. You may be surprised at the amount of crud on your system that Norton failed to notice.

I don't have that installed, and I probably should, but all I have is the Norton Suite.
I'm really gun-shy about downloading security programs, after one VERY bad experience.

Not to bore you with a long story,
but Spybot and several other programs were suggested to me shortly after I got the laptop,
Adaware (sp?) and one or 2 others, too (I was having some program freeze up problems at the time)
anyhow, I wish I could recall which one I tried to install first,
the result was that the computer would not boot up.
I never got to try to download any others.
That was when we had to do the first full system restore,
what a nightmare that was!

Honestly, I've had more problems with security programs, now that I think about it,
I had E-Trust (provided by my cable co.) for a while, that did NOT go well. Rolling Eyes

I understand why you would feel paranoid after a bad experience Zuzu. Similar experiences have happened to me. I will just say however that in all my use of and reading about Spybot I have yet to encounter a truly negative comment about it.

Also just to add: The Spybot and AVG Antivirus program combination has served me well to date. You still need a decent firewall however.

That's good to know, Mr. Green one of these days I may get to feeling gutsy and go for it,
but hubby may kill me dead if I kill the machine again. Laughing

You'll need to download four programs.
First, download and install AVG antivirus at http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
Second, download and install Spybot.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
Third, download and install Adaware.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
Fourth, download and install Regcleaner.
http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm

Install and run them in the order I listed them. Each one should improve things. If not, either your memory or your hard drive is going out. Both can have intermittent problems. Most of the new machines have the capability of testing the memory, but you have to turn it on in the system setup files. The hard drive is harder to test, but if the above programs can't help I'll see what I can dig up for you.
