Glasfryn the plant you've shown us is a Jerusalem Sage. Here's a piccie of one in flower:
It's hardy in all but the coldest of gardens, although hard frost can cause passing damage to the shoot tips. Oh and by the way Palustris is also correct with his ID as Phlomis fruticosa is its Latin name.

Phlomis fruticosa is Jerusalem sage. There is a pink flowered Phlomis too, but mine did not survive long enough to flower for a picture!

thanks all,
now you have identified the group I have been able to look it up in the blooming seed catalogue I got it from (it was another of the mystery seeds and I have come up with
P.viscosa(syn.P.russelliana)
which originates from Syria.
info from Chiltern seeds
they also stock from the same group
P.purpurea
P.samia
P.tuberosa
once again thanks for your help I would never have found it without knowing the group it came from.
