If any of you can help it would be great. This morning I saw a ton of what I think is lightning bugs in my living room--they had a grayish body with a redish head. Does anyone know how to get rid of them?????

Hi,welcome to the Stew. Feel free to post an intro of yourself in the Welcome to GardenStew forum so we can get to know each other.

Fireflies are beetles so a typical household bug spray should take care of them. Try catching as many as you can and throwing them outside before you reach for the bug spray tho. You might want to search for holes in screens, etc where they could have gotten and seal up their entrance.

Wow that would be a sight! (; all those lights flying around! Toni: what are lightning bugs good for? Are they 'good bugs" like ladybugs? Just curious! (:

The larvae especially appear to be beneficial, they eat snails and slugs. They also eat worms, but everyone has their little 'guilty pleasures' Rolling Eyes
The only info on what the adult firefly eats that I have run across is that some are predatory and each other fireflies and some drink nectar.

There are two chemicals in their taillight used in research on cancer, MS, cystic fibrosis and heart desease.
