Hello,

This is my first post. I am from Louisiana. I am wanting to dress up my front yard. I have a huge oak tree in front of my house. I would like to add a garden around it that will increase the value of my house.

I am looking for a mouth dropping fancy, and decorative look for the front yard.

I thank everyone in advance for their help! Cheers to the learning of gardening!

Hi water_oak, gardening under an oak tree can be tricky, they do not like to have thier roots disturbed and adding soil to make a garden area will suffocate the tree.
Can you show us a picture of the front yard so we can get an idea of how large the tree is and how much planting area there is away from the tree and if it gets morning or afternoon sun?

I love big ol' oak trees. When we had one we planted ferns and caladiums around the base. I have a neighbor who has two big oaks in her yard and both are encircled with loads of caladiums. I think it is mouth-dropping fancy!

Would that be a shady area?

First look for the short plants in front and tall ones behind......I like the cluster look in planting.
Say you plant tulips, use at least 6 or 8 in one spot in a circle.. In the fall do that.

I agree with bsewnsew. Tulips would look amazing around an oak tree.
