The house we lived in before we moved here had a fireplace,
and I brought all of my fireplace accessories with me when we moved.
But alas, this house has no fireplace, so it was all put away 20 years ago.
Then, about 5 years ago, I saw a photo in a magazine that inspired me,
so I pulled this old grate out of storage and began to use it as a planter.
It is lined with cocoa fiber and filled with Impatiens.

I would never have thought to use a grate that way. It's fantastic Zuzu and looks right at home in your garden. Wish I could find some insiration for some of the junk Ian has in the shed.

ZuZu, I just loved your idea! It really looks nice with the wrought iron. Is that a gate, fence..? I have an old grate in my fireplace, I could get me a new one just so that I can have an old weathered, seasoned one like yours! Hmmm, I feel a project coming on. (Drives my husband crazy )
I'd love to see more pics of your projects.

Oh My Gosh!! I know I'm a little late, but I just toured your garden and I am now sooo jealous I see how your grate fits in to your beautiful garden. I think the climate in N. Carolina and New Mexico are quite different, but I still dream of a garden like yours! You must be so proud, it is just lovely Zuzu. I look forward to seeing more pics.

Hi Coryg,
I'm really glad you enjoyed seeing my crazy garden and that you like this idea.
Isn't it funny how we all yearn for the sorts of gardens that grow easily
in other parts of the world?
I'm just as bad, I keep trying to turn this little corner of N.C. into a tropical jungle.

It's not really a gate, but I hoped it would give that impression,
so I'm very pleased that you thought it might actually be one.
You've inspired me to cover this project in another thread.

Looks grate Zuzu (bad pun, I know!)
