Iris seed pods

A small number of my irises have developed seed pods this year, so I've left them to develop as I've never tried planting irises before, always had rhizome chunks.

The pods need to dry for quite some time - what I've read indicated that they need to be brown and the seeds inside need to have darkened or they won't be viable. If you get impatient and pick a green pod or rummage for white seeds inside it it will be to no use.

SO - I have my (green) pods out there. I am concerned that they will brown and split open while I am out of town, losing the seeds. One suggestion I found was the idea of wrapping each pod in a bit of old pantyhose so I think I will try it (though it will look funny). Have any of you done this? How did it turn out?

Sounds like an interesting idea, Prim, I expect that it would work.

On the other hand, I leave some pods to ripen on some of my Iris every year
and I've never done anything special, Confused I just let them stand there 'til they're fully ripe.

They seem to be quite sturdy and have never fallen apart before I can gather them.
I actually leave them stand until they begin to split.
