Last week I went and bought material for an Amish quilt. I found a pattern called Sunshine and Shadows. I made a grid and numbered the colors and numbered the grid so I can get them in the right order. I scanned the pictures into the computer and printed them so I could have something visual to go by. Today, I sat and cut the material into 4 inch squares. When it's sewn together they will be three inch squares> I think there is approx. 320 squares. I bought purple thread for quilting because the back will be dark purple. My colors are the same as the picture, not the pattern but they are slightly different shades. I couldn't match them exactly. So, the first picture is the pattern. The second the quilt I found in an Amish book that I'm trying to sort of copy. It will have a 3 inch black border around the pattern. dooley

Good Luck with it Dooley. I never tried one but did make a Boston Common design once and I stress the word once. Very Happy http://www.jmxinternational.com/product.aspx?intProdID=2427&pid=182&cid=

If you like making quilt tops from squares like that, check out books by Eleanor Burns. She teaches how to stew strips of fabric together then cut them into the strips needed to put together both the Sunshine and Shadows and the Boston Common.

My mother used to crochet travel rugs that looked a lot like the first photograph. You must let us see your quilt once it's finished Dooley.

I don't usually do squares like this. I do more embroidery and applique things. But, after looking at a lot of Amish quilt patterns this one seemed the easiest to do. I can quilt straight lines and not all the complicated patterns. I hope it doesn't take too long to get it together. dooley

I love Amish-type quilts! But, I gotta say, making a quilt in the kind of weather you've been having.. ugh! Hope you have A/C!

No A/C here. dr can't have it with his health problems. No cooling of any type. Just fans. We survive. We drink lots of liquids and dress appropriately. We don't not do things because of the heat but we do take frequent breaks. It took me three tries to get those squares all measured and cut. dooley

It will be beautiful, can't wait to see it! Just remember all quilts are stiched with love, even the stiches you want to rip out.
